Character.AI Launches AI Character Calls

Character.AI, backed by a16z, has announced a new feature allowing users to talk to AI characters over calls. This functionality supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

The startup tested this feature before its public launch, with over 3 million users making more than 20 million calls. According to Character.AI, calls with AI characters can help users practice language skills, conduct mock interviews, or enhance role-playing game experiences.

Users can start a call with an AI character with just a tap of a button. Character.AI designed this feature to ensure a smooth calling experience with reduced latency. Switching between calling and texting is seamless, and there’s a “Tap to interrupt” option if you need to stop the AI from talking.

Character Voices and User Feedback

In March, Character.AI introduced Character Voices, enabling users to hear characters speak during one-on-one chats. With users able to create their own voices, the app’s library now boasts over 1 million voices.

The new calling feature arrives amidst complaints on Reddit about AI characters’ changing personalities. Character.AI responded to these complaints, explaining that no major changes were made. Some users may have experienced behavioral differences due to being part of a test.

Competition on the Horizon

This week, The Information reported that Google is developing its own customized chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI. As the race in AI development heats up, users will benefit from more advanced and diverse AI interactions.
